“Okay, so this Eden guy wants Pink’s blood to feed his starving mosquito girlfriend. Thats really weird.” Prerna was constantly whispering.

“No!” Sonarika whispered back,” That wicked lady must have hypnotised him.”

“To get Pink’s blood?” whispered Prerna,” This Pink seems to be too important.”

“O look, there comes our beloved Hyena again.”

“Stay quiet Prerna!” said Sonarika giving her an angry look,” I have told you so many times. That creature is not a hyena. Its the spirit of the Tree God who comes to check if all students are using eco-friendly materials.”

” I cant believe this!” Prerna whispered angrily as she and Sonarika made their way through the narrow passage looking about for their seats,” You finally dragged me here to watch this pathetic movie. The next three hours are going to be horrible!”

“Shut up now!” said Sonarika,”Thank God we got the tickets. I was reading “How to make your wish come true” by Mishti Sen and I came across the concept of the law of attraction and……………………………..”

“And the only wish you could think of was this ridiculous movie!” Prerna tried hard to keep her voice as low as possible as they stood up for the national anthem.

“This is heaven,” said Sonarika as the background score of the movie played in the theatre.

The girls arrived at Mrs. Narayani’s house just at the time of sunset. The house was actually a beautiful cottage and there was a small kitchen garden on the outside. There were green and red chillies growing all over along with some lemons and brinjals. Vividha put down the boxes and knocked at the door. Ragini stood there silently trying to stop her tears from washing over her face. She could not bear the thought of having to work at Ms. Manya’s house for even one more day.

A middle aged housemaid opened the door. By the look on her face it seemed that she was expecting them.

“Ms. Manya rang Mrs. Narayani this afternoon,” she said opening the door wide for them to walk in,” Are these her paintings?”

“Yes,” replied Vividha,” We have come to deliver these.”

“Thank you so much,” she said,” Peter will take them in.”

A middle aged man appeared at the door and picked up the boxes.

“Put them in Madam’s room,” said the lady,” And ask Mrinal to prepare some tea for these lovely girls.”

“O please do come in! Mrinal makes excellent herbal tea. It will warm you up.”

“No Mr. Eden! You cannot harm Miss Pink,” Sonarika was yelling in her sleep,” She loves you so much. You were going to propose to her. No! Stop. Please……”

“This girl even dreams about such ridiculous stuff,” Prerna grumbled turning on the light.

“Will you mind shutting up now!”said Prerna giving Sonarika a slight push to wake her up,” I am done with all this ghost drama.”

“O dear,” said Sonarika slowly opening her eyes,”Mr. Eden, he really was a ghost and……And Miss Pink, o my, poor Miss Pink, she thought that he was her true love and he…….He stabbed her!”

“Beloved Goddess!” said Prerna holding her head,” Why the hell did I put this thought into your head? I feel so sleepy.”

“There is one last thing you must do before you leave,” Ms. Manya told Ragini upon getting to know that she was finally leaving,” Mrs. Narayani, my beloved friend has come to town. She had given me some of her paintings but sadly none of them could sell. It is only fair that they be returned to her. I want you to carry them to her house and also give her my good wishes.”

Ragini smiled upon hearing this. Maybe Ms. Manya wasnt as evil as she had thought. Maybe she did have a soft corner for people.

Ragini went to the storeroom and packed the paintings very carefully in cardboard boxes. The paintings werent too huge and fit easily into the smaller boxes.

“Now there are six boxes here,” she said,” I cannot carry them alone. I should ask Vividha to help me.”

“But why on earth did she ask you to deliver these boxes?” asked Vividha surprised by the news. She picked up one of the boxes to check how heavy it was.

“Not quite heavy though,” she said,”I can easily carry four of these. You better carry only two. You already look so pale.”

“Cockroach cockroach go away. Never come another day. Little Prerna wants to pee…..” Prerna was standing at the door of the washroom feeling terribly scared of the monstrous creature running about on the marble floor sensing things with its long antennae.

“Sona!” yelled Prerna,” If you are done with your midnight date with the demons, please come here and help me out!”

“Now whats the matter?” said Sonarika burning some more sage,” Its just a little cockroach. It wont swallow you up.”

“This dumb girl is completely useless,” muttered Prerna angrily,”Here I have to pee urgently and she is busy filling up our room with more and more smoke. Incense, sage, candles, now whats left?”

“Prerna,” said Sonarika in a loud voice, “Have you seen my essential oil diffuser?”

“I have made up my mind and I am not going to stop now. I chose to stay here as I wanted to help Mrs. Narayani and the owners of this place. I have tried enough but nothing seems to be working out. I cannot go on living like this. I am going to join “The Midnight Blossom” and  I am leaving this house forever.”

Ragini was having a conversation with herself. The Midnight Blossom was a small place located close to the woods. It provided services like spell casting, oracle card readings, training on witchcraft, meditative exercises, intuitive readings and connecting with fourth and fifth dimensional beings. The place opened for customers only from 12 am to 4am because none of them would prefer to be seen there in broad daylight for practices like spellwork and intuitive readings were thought of as rituals of the devil and considered as crazy woo-woo stuff.

“If wind was a person, I would have hugged her as if she were my best friend. No matter how I feel, when she comes and ruffles my hair, I begin to feel at ease. When she wipes off my tears and dries up my face, I feel loved and protected. She cannot return to the place from where she has left. I cannot go back to the past either. Alas! Sometimes I wonder if its good for all of us. Maybe or maybe not.”

Ragini was trimming the bushes in the early hours of the morning. The winds were blowing fiercely and she was certain that a storm was on its way. Sometimes when life seems too dull and monotonous, our heart secretly starts praying for a storm. We may not realise it but most of the storms in our lives are a manifestation of our heart’s deepest desires. When we are sick of being in the autopilot mode living our lives with no passion at all, we pray for disruption, we long for erosion and we desire nothing less than a rebirth.

Sonarika was  lighting the incense when Prerna started yelling at her.

“Its bedtime now,” she said,” You lit the incense in the morning, then again at sunset. So why now?”

shutterstock_1024133467

“To ward off all evil spirits,” said Sonarika arranging each incense in the stand,”We just moved in yesterday. God knows what all entities have been residing in here.”

“God save me,” said Prerna,”there are no entities here. Its just the two of us. First sandalwood incense, then jasmine incense and now its time for the roses. Are you trying to ward off the evil spirits or making them more comfortable in here?”

“Dont talk rubbish,” said Sonarika,”what I am doing is really important. We must keep our place pure and cleansed.”

“And what about that big ugly cockroach in the washroom!” yelled Prerna,” Have you done something about it?”

“This girl,” said Sonarika,”Here I  am talking about negative energies and………………”

“And now you are planning to suffocate me with all this smoke,”said Prerna,”one incense was more than enough. Why so many?”

“Dont forget,” said Sonarika,” Your grandma says that……….”

Ragini sat in the stillness of the night not knowing how to prevent the sound of her sobs from crossing the threshold of her room. She covered her mouth with her hands and she could feel the immense grief rising like a raging storm within her. She had no clue why this sudden emotional meltdown had taken place. She didnt know what had triggered it but she knew that it was not just a moment of weakness, it was the result of years of built up pain and anguish which was now flowing out in the form of tears.

“I wonder if Palak will like this place!” Vividha was really concerned about their new home. To her, it was a perfect, small cozy home with  a wooden bed and a beautiful fireplace well equipped with chimney caps. Through the window she could see the beautiful view of the setting sun spreading its crimson hue across the sky. She sat down on the floor which was clean and smelt of wet mud. Looking at her new surroundings made her anxious, yet excited.

“I am going to take this leap of faith,” she whispered into the stillness of the evening.

“Daisy and Sahil are expecting their first baby next year mom,” Ved was speaking to his mother over the phone.

“Wonderful news!” his mother exclaimed,” I hope you are being a good friend in their hour of need.”

“I dont know how to help them mom, but I want to.”

“Why dont you go and have a word with Daisy’s parents,” his mother suggested,” They have been angry with her way too long and now a family reunion is a must.”

“How will my going there make things any better?” he asked doubtfully.

“Why do you always doubt yourself son?” she spoke with concern.

Ragini lay on her bed and closed her eyes in a hope to stop the flood of tears from washing over her face yet again. But alas! Fresh tears flowed down from her closed eyes dripping onto the sides of her face moistening her pillow. Just when she had lost all hope for things to get any better, she heard a faint knock at the door of her room.
