“I have made up my mind and I am not going to stop now. I chose to stay here as I wanted to help Mrs. Narayani and the owners of this place. I have tried enough but nothing seems to be working out. I cannot go on living like this. I am going to join “The Midnight Blossom” and  I am leaving this house forever.”

Ragini was having a conversation with herself. The Midnight Blossom was a small place located close to the woods. It provided services like spell casting, oracle card readings, training on witchcraft, meditative exercises, intuitive readings and connecting with fourth and fifth dimensional beings. The place opened for customers only from 12 am to 4am because none of them would prefer to be seen there in broad daylight for practices like spellwork and intuitive readings were thought of as rituals of the devil and considered as crazy woo-woo stuff.

“If wind was a person, I would have hugged her as if she were my best friend. No matter how I feel, when she comes and ruffles my hair, I begin to feel at ease. When she wipes off my tears and dries up my face, I feel loved and protected. She cannot return to the place from where she has left. I cannot go back to the past either. Alas! Sometimes I wonder if its good for all of us. Maybe or maybe not.”

Ragini was trimming the bushes in the early hours of the morning. The winds were blowing fiercely and she was certain that a storm was on its way. Sometimes when life seems too dull and monotonous, our heart secretly starts praying for a storm. We may not realise it but most of the storms in our lives are a manifestation of our heart’s deepest desires. When we are sick of being in the autopilot mode living our lives with no passion at all, we pray for disruption, we long for erosion and we desire nothing less than a rebirth.

Sonarika was  lighting the incense when Prerna started yelling at her.

“Its bedtime now,” she said,” You lit the incense in the morning, then again at sunset. So why now?”

“To ward off all evil spirits,” said Sonarika arranging each incense in the stand,”We just moved in yesterday. God knows what all entities have been residing in here.”

“God save me,” said Prerna,”there are no entities here. Its just the two of us. First sandalwood incense, then jasmine incense and now its time for the roses. Are you trying to ward off the evil spirits or making them more comfortable in here?”

“Dont talk rubbish,” said Sonarika,”what I am doing is really important. We must keep our place pure and cleansed.”

“And what about that big ugly cockroach in the washroom!” yelled Prerna,” Have you done something about it?”

“This girl,” said Sonarika,”Here I  am talking about negative energies and………………”

“And now you are planning to suffocate me with all this smoke,”said Prerna,”one incense was more than enough. Why so many?”

“Dont forget,” said Sonarika,” Your grandma says that……….”

Ragini sat in the stillness of the night not knowing how to prevent the sound of her sobs from crossing the threshold of her room. She covered her mouth with her hands and she could feel the immense grief rising like a raging storm within her. She had no clue why this sudden emotional meltdown had taken place. She didnt know what had triggered it but she knew that it was not just a moment of weakness, it was the result of years of built up pain and anguish which was now flowing out in the form of tears.

“I wonder if Palak will like this place!” Vividha was really concerned about their new home. To her, it was a perfect, small cozy home with  a wooden bed and a beautiful fireplace well equipped with chimney caps. Through the window she could see the beautiful view of the setting sun spreading its crimson hue across the sky. She sat down on the floor which was clean and smelt of wet mud. Looking at her new surroundings made her anxious, yet excited.

“I am going to take this leap of faith,” she whispered into the stillness of the evening.

“Daisy and Sahil are expecting their first baby next year mom,” Ved was speaking to his mother over the phone.

“Wonderful news!” his mother exclaimed,” I hope you are being a good friend in their hour of need.”

“I dont know how to help them mom, but I want to.”

“Why dont you go and have a word with Daisy’s parents,” his mother suggested,” They have been angry with her way too long and now a family reunion is a must.”

“How will my going there make things any better?” he asked doubtfully.

“Why do you always doubt yourself son?” she spoke with concern.

Ragini lay on her bed and closed her eyes in a hope to stop the flood of tears from washing over her face yet again. But alas! Fresh tears flowed down from her closed eyes dripping onto the sides of her face moistening her pillow. Just when she had lost all hope for things to get any better, she heard a faint knock at the door of her room.

“Its a stormy night yet again. I can smell the wet mud and feel these mighty winds upon my skin. I have no idea why I am suddenly so in love with these storms. I used to be scared of them once upon a time. But now, everything feels so different. I am slowly falling in love with this new life of mine. For years I have struggled for that one job, that one promotion, that one letter of appreciation. But now, all I want is peace and meaning in my life. I am no longer drawn to stuff that does not make my soul sparkle and my heart glow with joy. Wealth, fame and good fortune, nothing lasts forever. I want to spend my life in a way that I feel good about it, not what has been termed as good by the mortal beings.” Nisha sat alone in the corridor of the building thinking about her past, present and future. She had been through a lot and even in the present moment life was not easy. But she was convinced that she would not bow down to temporary stuff that would never bring her happiness in any form.

Diya was preparing some green apple curry for dinner. She had sliced the apples and was now busy chopping the onions. She was in a pretty happy mood as she felt that finally her talent would get the recognition it deserved. She removed the chopped garlic from the frying pain and added sone chopped onions to it. She waited for a few minutes for the onions to change their colour before adding some curry powder to the mixture.

Ragini was dusting the old wooden desk in Ms. Manya’s room. She could hear the sound of the shower as Ms. Manya was having a bath late at night. Moonlight sparkled through the window and softly spread out onto the lavish bed. Ragini was too tired and busy to appreciate any of these wonders. Her mind was anxious and lost in thoughts of doubts and worries. She wrapped her shawl properly around herself and arranged the scattered sheets of paper properly in the folder.

Her gaze fell upon a beautiful rose quartz crystal which was placed at one end of the table. It had a relaxing aura around it and was emitting the vibration of calmness and kindness. Ragini picked it up and held it close to her heart.

The Babblebrook Hotel was located at the heart of the town. If anyone had ever dreamt of an enchanted castle, this was it. Ranging from antique portraits to rustic book shelves, from huge wooden armchairs to glittering carpets, the place looked nothing less than an ancient magical store of the witches. The staircases were adorned with soft fluffy carpets with complex intricated embroidered patterns of leaves and fairies, the floor had a soothing wooden look coupled with a touch of marble and stone.

Nisha walked up the huge wooden staircase reaching to a point where an old painting caught her attention. She stopped to look at the beautiful work of art and wondered why she was so captivated by its charm. It was a simple painting of a girl sitting on her knees with her hands folded and her head bowed down in prayer.

“I am glad you are back.” A sharp bitter voice spoke to Nisha. She turned around and saw Ahan staring angrily at her.

“Ahan,” she spoke in a troubled voice,” I  heard about you. Its high time you understand that I do not wish to be with you and move on. Your silly tricks wont change my mind.”

“So Arjun told you that I visited his shop,” he spoke in a bitter tone,”Dont get me wrong Nisha. I was so heart-broken that I…………”

“I get it Ahan,” she said,” I hope that you too are getting it.”

Diya sat down in Mr. Nishant’s office with a worried look on her face. She could see Mr. Ajay standing outside through the glass door. She took a deep breath in and released it.

“So Ms. Diya,” said Mr. Nishant walking in,” We have decided to collaborate with you for the next edition of our magazine. We are planning on giving it a kind of garden theme this month. We have established four beautiful gardens in addition to a new swimmimg pool. Keeping in mind the needs of our customers, we feel that they should enjoy the comfort of sitting in the sun amidst lush green trees and blooming flowers. Your work appears pretty interesting and I think it shall be able to attract more customers. As for Ms. Nisha, we need her help with our upcoming Christmas edition where we are planning on promoting our newly furnished halls with comfy armchairs and cozy fireplaces. I believe that Ms. Nisha’s articles on Hygge shall be able to spread the message of togetherness and attract more customers to our lovely hotel.”

“Why doesnt he stay with you?”Nishant asked her.

“He left us because……………..Because he couldnt handle mother’s harsh words. She called him a loser and told him how he had failed as a father and as a husband. She cursed him repeatedly for not earning enough for the four of us. He couldnt take it anymore and he left.”

“Didnt he think of you and Palak even once?”

“I dont know,” she said,” We never saw him again. Grandma told us that he had written to her once and not mentioned anything about us.”

“Are you angry with him?”

“What do you think about this?”Ragini asked Ved showing him a soft blanket baby pink in colour with an adorable teddy bear print at the corners,” Will Daisy like it?”

“You are asking the wrong person,”he said,” I am not really good at all this.”

“Do you have any sibings Mr. Ved?”she asked folding the blanket.

“No,” he  said,” I am an only child. And so are you I believe?”

“I had a baby sister once,” said Ragini, her voice reducing to a faint whisper,” But the fairies took her when she was seven months old. I cursed them so much and destroyed all my fairy toys.

How can they be so cruel! I would yell at mom not knowing how to handle the grief of losing someone so dear. But as I grew older, I felt so relieved that the fairies took her to a better home where she could live without the anguish of listening to ungrateful people whose greed had throttled their love for fellow beings.”

Fear is often the gateway to our dreams. It looks like the old cracked door of a haunted castle which we dare not enter but once we make that bold move we realise that the castle looks very much like the land of our dreams. Those cobwebs which look so disgusting can be dusted off pretty easily. Spiders then run for their lives as we aim at them with the broom. The web of confusion too can be dusted off once inspired action hits at it like a shooting star with a powerful healing intensity.”
