“I cant believe how annoying and ridiculous a person can possibly be,” said Arjun drinking his coffee,” He said that I am a scared kid who ran away because he couldnt handle things. And then…………….”
“It took him only that one moment to shatter all your hopes and confidence,” whispered Nisha looking at him with her soft gaze.
“Yes,” said Arjun,” just that one moment was enough to create a wound so deep that its still bleeding.”
“And its still hurting so much,” she spoke calmly.
“It is,” he said and put down his cup,” it is hurting so bad that I have lost all my apetite and enthusiasm.”
“And now you just dont know what to do,” she said.
“Yes, I dont feel like doing anything at all.”
“And thats okay,” she said,” you can have this coffee and warm yourself by the fire. Maybe you receive a message from some of your beloved ancestors.”
Nisha slowly got up and moved towards the window. She could see a blurred view of the starry night through the laced curtains. A lone tear escaped from her eyes as she recalled all that had happened at the hotel. She wanted to tell him about Ahan and her sudden disappearance and about that evil man but………But the time was just not right. He was hurt and badly wounded. And the last thing she wanted to do was to add to his distress.
“I am sorry,” said Diya rubbing her hands together as Vivan and she sat down in the empty corridor,” I am really sorry for yelling at you that day. That wasnt the right way to behave.”
“I know,” said Vivan looking at her,”I know you were really angry at me for my carelessness. But I will tell you honestly that I just didnt care to inform you where I was because I didnt know that…………….”
“I care about you?” she asked.
“No,” he replied immediately,” I didnt know that you care so much.”
“Whats with all these words,” she said gazing at the stars,” Trust, care………..I mean a partner trusts you, cares for you, is compassionate towards you, holds space for your anger and………..”
“And forgives you,” he said.
“Yes,” she whispered,” forgives you.”
“I know that feeling Diya,” he said putting his arm around her,” when you just cant stop worrying about someone’s safety. It once happened that Arjun had left for shopping with one of his cousins and didnt return until it grew dark. His phone was turned off and I was so worried where he might have been. And this time, I know that you suffered from the same feeling for days. I had had an emotional meltdown in those few hours when I was unable to contact Arjun and I can very well understand how you might have felt all this while.
I am really sorry, I truly am.”
“I see,” said Diya,” that you do realise your mistake. I cant stay angry with you for long. But this time what you did shook my faith in our relation because…………”
“Your ex-boyfriend used to do similar things thus hurting you repeatedly?”
“How did you know that?” she asked feeling stunned by his words.
“Arjun,” said Nisha walking towards him,” I wanted to ask you something.”
“Go on,” he said sitting with his eyes closed.
“Will you come back?” she asked.
“Come back?” he said opening his eyes and sitting up straight,” From where?”
“I mean,” she said slowly,” when you leave tonight and go back home, will you come back and meet me again?”
“Why this question?” he asked feeling a little surprised.
“I want an answer,” she said looking away from him.
“Maybe,” he said pouring himself some more coffee,” we all can meet again next weekend and at our place this time.”
“Thank you,” she said,” for the invitation.”
“Nisha,” he said as he saw her walking away,” I met Dr. Rajat at the grocery store the other day. He isnt holding on to any anger against us. We had a pleasant conversation and he told me that his son is heart broken because of a bitter breakup. I am just guessing that the girl might be you. The way he was trying to impress you when he had saved the abducted victim, I felt that he likes you very much. I am sorry if I am wrong but if its really you, I am glad that you broke up with him.”
Nisha smiled a little on hearing the last sentence. She was so worried about how this was going to turn out.
“And why so?” she asked him.
“Because,” he said sipping his coffee,” Angels dont look good with demons.”
On hearing the word “demon”, the face of the evil man in the library flashed in front of her eyes. The way he had slid his hand through her hair, the way he had looked at her with those murderous eyes………….
“Nisha,” said Arjun,” Did I say something wrong? Why do you suddenly look so pale?”
“What else did Dr. Rajat tell you?”she asked coming back to her senses.
“Nothing more,” he said.
“Arjun,” she said sitting down next to him,” I was dating Mr. Ahan. I met him the night you had conducted your workshop in the hotel. Things didnt work out well and we broke up long before you and I came back on talking terms with each other.”
“Is that all?” he asked.
“Why do you ask this?” she said.
“When we were at the hotel, there were rumours that Dr. Rajat’s son was slapped by a charming woman he had proposed. At that time, I hadnt given it a second thought but later on I guessed that……..”
“You guessed it right,” she said looking away from him again.
“Well,” he said leaning back on his seat,” that guy is so annoying that anyone would have slapped him. But on a serious note, why did you slap him?”
“This isnt the right time to get into such detailed discussions,” she said,” you are recovering from the memories of a bitter incident. You should take some rest now. And, O dear, I simply forgot. The pumkin pie is almost ready to serve and I have set the cutlery too and………..”
“Not again Nisha,” he said sitting up straight to look at her,” everytime we part ways leaving so many things unsaid. This time I want to know it all. Unspoken words are weakening our bond.”
“Our bond,” she whispered,” and what exactly do you mean by that? What am I to you? What bond are you talking about?”
“The bond because of which I was able to trust you when the world told me otherwise, the bond because of which Santa gave me those anklets to gift you, the bond because of which I believe in Santa, the bond because of which you wrote me that letter, the bond because of which I didnt question you when we met at the store, the bond because of which I was dying to see your smile when you wore those earrings…….”
“You were dying to see my smile?” she asked him sounding pleasantly surprised by his words.
“Dont try to change the topic,” he said,” Tell me why you slapped him.”
